Our summer programmes are an exciting and effective way for you to improve your English while living and studying in one of the world’s most famous, stimulating, and beautiful cities.

If you choose a 15 hours course, you will only have morning lessons, which finish at 12:30.

If you choose the Senior or Senior Intensive course, you will have 21 hours of lessons, both in the morning and afternoon, as well as 4 hours of activities or private one-to-one lessons.

In the Mornings

Students at CIE Oxford Summer School

Beginning at 9:00 a.m., you will have three hours of General English lessons in a group of no more than twelve students. For the first 2 hours we work with a course book to enable you to improve the 4 main skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as grammar and vocabulary. The third hour focuses on practical English and study skills to help you use the English you have learnt.

Our qualified teachers will help you improve your English language skills. During the summer months there is a greater emphasis on interaction and communication in the lessons, which allows short term students to make most of their stay.

In the Afternoons

After lunch, you have two options:

  • Lessons & Social activities Most students join our combined programme. It consists of 6 hours of General English group lessons three times a week, and 4 hours of social activities twice a week. Activities could be punting on the river, touring one of the historic Oxford colleges, or enjoying cream tea in a café. Lessons as well as social activities run from 1:30pm and are finished by 4:00pm.
Summer Activities and Excursions for Adults

  • Intensive lessons If you wish to study full-time, you can opt for private lessons. This course consists of 21 hours of group lessons, as well as 4 hours ( twice a week) of private one-to-one lessons. Choose this option if you want:
  • Further English practice specifically adapted to your needs
  • English for Specific Purposes (Business, Medicine, Law, conversation, etc.)
  • Examination preparation (IELTS, FCE, etc.)
  • GCSE and Advanced Level (A level) exams

All students under the age of 18 are strongly advised to attend a full-time programme (15 hours of morning lessons plus afternoon lessons/activities). Any student under the age of 18 choosing not to attend afternoon activities/lessons must obtain written permission from a parent or guardian.

The summer lessons for students aged 15 + normally take place at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford or elsewhere outside Bocardo House, such as the Oxford Union or one of the other world-renowned Oxford University colleges. The average age of our students is 17/18, although we do cater for all age groups. Click here to see photos on facebook.

Students are provided a wide range of hot buffet lunch on the premises.

Hot lunch

This consists of a vast selection of different hot meals every day. There is a wide range of freshly prepared food to choose from, including mains and sides, starters, desserts, salads, bread, drinks, and fruit. It caters for vegetarians as well as students wishing to eat halal. Click here for more photos.

Alternative lunch*

Very rarely (once or twice a year) the dining hall is closed to us, in which case the kitchen provides an alternative packed lunch. This consists of a fresh sandwich, a piece of fruit, a drink, and a snack (a chocolate bar and/or a packet of crisps).
